CAFE Montréal organized, last April 29 at HEC, an informational and networking session geared to inform the next generation in family enterprises of the different tools and services CAFE has to offer them.

CAFE Montréal, the local chapter of the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise, is committed to the growth and development of the next generation of family business leaders. Conscious of the challenges they will soon have to face, and concerned of their success to ensure the sustainability of their family business, CAFE Montréal reunited young business leaders for a cocktail and information session marked by dynamic discussions among participants.

It was a unique occasion of meeting among pairs who shared their thoughts on the advantages and challenges of working in a family business as well as the need to take their stand as the next generation.

This session led to the launching of a Next Generation Support Group project by CAFE Montréal. Additional presentations of this session are on the agenda, as the enthusiasm from both participants and presenters lead us to believe that there is a real need for support, information and sharing from this upcoming generation.

The launching of the second edition of Dennis Dwyer’s book « This Business of Family: Preventing and Resolving Disputes in Family-Owned Businesses” which took place on March 25, gathered up a large and diversified audience, from the business and university communities alike.

Everyone enjoyed the telling of a few anecdotes taken from Dennis Dwyer’s vast experience and real life examples about the personal relationships between members of a family business. Mr. Dwyer, in his own spirited way, drew up a realistic yet optimistic portrait of the unavoidable conflicts that occur along any business family’s path.

Professor David M. Lank, Director Emeritus, Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies at the Desautels  Faculty of Management, who wrote the foreword for the book, entertained us as the master of ceremonies with his sharp wit and humor, along with Colette Vanasse, Executive Director of the McGill – HEC International Business Families Centre. A book signing and cocktail followed the presentations.

The dynamics of a parent-child relationship in a family business

An intimate setting set the tone for a successful evening of inspiring family business story-telling, as told with humor and humility by its principal characters, Mrs. Cora Tsouflidou and her son Nicholas. “Chez Cora… flavors of a family business” gathered up more that 60 enthusiastic students and their family members last March 16, interested in this business family’s unique success tory. Angela Burlton, Adjunct Professor, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, interviewed mother and son who passionately discussed the different aspects of the parent-child relationship in their family business and graciously answered many questions from the audience. The evening concluded with a cocktail where participants mingled with our prestigious guests. A unique networking experience!
